Teaching Philosophy

As I encourage students to discuss and share with one another, I make it my utmost responsibility to maintain the classroom as a safe space for students.  I am aware of and appreciative of the various, diverse backgrounds that students will bring to the classroom and incorporate them into their artmaking.  These multiple perspectives of shared human experience is what makes art so meaningful and exciting.  Through my teaching, I hope to provide an anti-oppressive approach in how I engage with students and provide artist references from all corners of the world.

With reflection, we will address the impacts of our artmaking in relation to social justice, sustainability, and community relations.  This issue-based approach will be the core of my teaching practice.  Students will see my classroom as a faucet to output their frustrations and confusion from these issues.  At the same time, we will come together to output what we learn from our individual and shared experiences; to continue to share, listen, and learn respectfully beyond the classroom.
